Local volunteers prepare for Hurricane Florence

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WOWO): Volunteers from northern Indiana are getting ready to help with storm relief efforts on the east coast.

The National Weather Service says Hurricane Florence, currently a Category 4 storm, will make landfall late tomorrow night along the mid-Atlantic states, prompting evacuations in the Carolinas and Virginia.

The storm is expected to impact millions of people, so the American Red Cross and Indiana Michigan Power are getting ready to help.

The utility tells our Partners in News at ABC 21 they have 200 contractors and employees ready to help with restoration, and the Red Cross has sent at least a dozen local volunteers already, with more expected to be deployed.

President Trump announced that federal teams are ready to assist whenever the storm hits, and urged those living in the affected areas to “be prepared, be careful, and be SAFE!”
