FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WOWO) — A homicide investigation is underway after Fort Wayne Police discovered a deceased individual while responding to a reported disturbance Wednesday night on the city’s south side.
Officers were initially dispatched to the intersection of Stardale Drive and Turtle Creek on reports of a disturbance involving several individuals and a vehicle. While police were en route, additional callers reported hearing gunshots in the area.
When officers arrived, they learned that several people involved in the incident had fled before police reached the scene. A K9 track was launched in an attempt to locate those individuals.
During the search, officers discovered a body in a field south of the original scene. Police said the individual appeared to have suffered a gunshot wound and was pronounced dead at the scene by medics.
Investigators have not yet confirmed whether the deceased person was connected to the original disturbance.
The Fort Wayne Police Department’s Homicide Team, Crime Scene Unit, and Air Support Unit responded to assist with the investigation. Detectives are currently interviewing witnesses and processing evidence from the scene as they work to determine exactly what occurred and whether any suspects remain outstanding.
Police say the investigation remains in its early stages, and additional information will be released as it becomes available.
