Regional Cities funding clears Senate hurdle

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WOWO): One step closer.

Lawmakers have been going back and forth on whether or not to award an additional $42-million to Governor Mike Pence’s Regional Cities initiative ever since three cities were announced as winners last December rather than the expected two.

Fort Wayne, South Bend and Evansville were all awarded $42-million each, though lawmakers had only budgeted $84-million at the time.

A bill providing the money from tax amnesty proceeds was attached to a pension bill in the State Senate Tuesday, where it passed, according to the Journal Gazette.

It still has to clear another hurdle in the House, where support for the extra cash has been lukewarm from some Republicans, next week.
