Stutzman Loses Key Senate Campaign Staffer

WASHINGTON (WOWO): Republican Marlin Stutzman is looking for someone to run his campaign for the U.S. Senate.

Brendon DelToro had been managing Stutzman's campaign since May, but he told Gannett Media's Maureen Groppe he was leaving because he and the conservative congressman had “different visions for how the direction of the campaign was going.” DelToro did not elaborate.

DelToro says he is staying to help with the transition to a new campaign manager, but he is also the third member of Stutzman's campaign staff to leave over the past week, joining political director Joe Knepper and polling consultant Brooks Kochvar.

Whether that means Stutzman's campaign in the three-way race for the Republican nomination to replace retiring Senator Dan Coats is in trouble remains to be seen – fundraising numbers are due this week.

Stutzman is considered the favored candidate of the Republican tea party wing, with fellow Congressman Todd Young and former state Republican Party chairman Eric Holcomb seen as more friendly to the Republican establishment. Young has held a sizable lead in early fundraising. Former Congressman Baron Hill and former Arc of Indiana director John Dickerson are seeking the Democratic nomination.
