UPDATE: Body Waiting to be Identified, Fundraiser Set Up for Kayaker’s Family

The Fort Wayne Fire Department searched the Maumee River Friday near Kreager Park.

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WOWO): A search and rescue team is investigating a body that was recovered from the Maumee River near Kreager Park in Adams Township.

Rescue crews received their first call around 9 p.m. Tuesday that a few kayakers were located downstream of the Hosey Dam, and crews were able to to pull two people from the water.

According to our Partners in News at 21Alive, 24-year-old Sean Heibel assisted two other kayakers who were struggling in the water. Crews searched for Heibel for nearly two days despite rough waters.

As of Wednesday, one of the rescued kayakers was said to be in good condition and the other was said to be in serious condition.

Rescuers on the scene did not say if the kayakers were wearing life jackets. The body that was recovered Thursday is awaiting identification from Heibel's family.

A fundraiser has been set up for Heibel's family. The family's goal is to set up a warning system to better inform the public when local rivers are flooded.
