INDIANAPOLIS (AP) – U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers have seized 27 gallons of a substance commonly known as a date rape drug at the Indianapolis International Airport throughout one month.
The strong intoxicant Gamma-Butyrolactone, or GBL, was seized in September as it came from various countries. Often times it was headed to somewhere in the U.S. The seized GBL has an estimated street value of about $35,000.
WTHR-TV reports GBL is converted into Gamma-Hydroxybutyrate, a controlled substances that's also known as GBH, when consumed.
GBL is an industrial solvent that's commonly used in the production of polyurethane, pesticides, elastic fibers, pharmaceuticals, coating on metal or plastic, and other products, according to the federal Drug Enforcement Administration. It's also sold illegally as a supplement for bodybuilding, fat loss and to combat signs of aging.
