SW Indiana Storm Unleashed Estimated 120 mph Winds

EVANSVILLE, Ind. (AP) — The National Weather Service says a severe thunderstorm that hit southwestern Indiana on Friday afternoon unleashed straight-line winds estimated at 120 miles per hour in some areas.

Lead forecaster Greg Meffert with the National Weather Service's Paducah, Kentucky office says a survey team found structural damage caused by 70 to 90 mile per hour winds in southern Vanderburgh County.

No injuries were reported, but about 9,000 Vectren customers remained without power Saturday afternoon.

Meffert says the team found a path of damage about 3 miles wide and is proceeding into adjacent Warrick County to continue their assessment.

He says the survey team has seen no evidence that a tornado hit the area and the damage appears to have been caused by straight-line winds.
